“God has a body,” writes Episcopal priest Brian C. Taylor (Setting the Gospel Free). What is this body? The body is “the manifested universe and everything that it does.” Taylor notes, “All things seen and unseen are filled with the pulsing, ever recreating life of God. There is no dividing line between spiritual and physical, for all physical matter is nothing but energy, and energy is spirit, God’s spirit of life.”
No, this is not naturalism; rather, this is the ancient teaching of the Church amplified by modern science: God’s omnipresence. Spirit does not just include all, Spirit pervades all and is the Active Agent acting within and through Creation.
What is possibly most problematic for us to trust and live is that we are the universe that God enfolds and inhabits. We are essentially both the expression of the Body of God and the Body of God, for in Truth what manifests is.
To experience this Truth, we relax the mind and open the Heart. We find that "Heart" is not "my" heart but the Heart that is the expression of Life Itself. We discover that every particularity of Life is Life.
At times, we may sense a Vastness so immense that the mind is baffled wordless, while, at other times, we may experience the Hereness-And-Nowness of this Universal Body so strongly that we, again, remain baffled wordless. Here, then, arises awe, awe that arises from the felt-perception that we ourselves are part of this whole Mystery we seek, adore, and love.
Could it be the great spiritual Masters came to tell us this? Were they pointing us to the Truth not just about God, but the Cosmos and, consequently, we ourselves? If so, to love God is to love the Universe, and to love any particularity of the Cosmos is to love God. Then, no act of Love is other than love of Self, the Self - not the self - that includes Everything.
